Yuma Crossing National Heritage Area
While in Yuma we visited the parks that are part of the Yuma Crossing National Heritage Area. The West Wetlands Park is part of the area and is located at the northwest edge of Yuma. Of the five parks included, this one is the largest. The park is a converted landfill comprised of 110 acres and opened in 2002.
See our posts and videos on the other parks:
Something For Everyone
It has a lake, playground, frisbee golf, and picnic ramadas. In addition, there are hummingbird and butterfly gardens and a burrowing owl habitat, as well as Centennial Beach, and a boat launch with boat trailer parking.
Super Nice Playground
Stewart Vincent Wolfe Memorial Playground, also known as the Castle Park was donated to the West Wetlands in 2007 and is one of the largest creative playgrounds in the country. In December 2015 the playground was destroyed by a fire and rebuilt and reopened in December 2016.
Fishing Available (with A License)
There is fishing permitted and the lake is stocked with a variety of fish. You do need a fishing license and there are daily limits. On the day we visited several people had miniature sailboats on the lake.
The Mormon Battalion
There is also a beach area and a walking trail that runs along the Colorado River. We came upon a statue memorializing the First Iowa Volunteers also known as the Mormon Battalion. A very cool monument. There is also an area where there are structures similar to tepees made of tree branches with signage describing the area.
Also in the park is the Arizona Public Service Solar Demonstration Garden. The area is surrounded by a chain link fence and on the fence is metal art. Among the metal art were scorpions, horses and elephants and many more.
All in all, this is a wonderful park that the local community has come together to create. We would encourage anyone visiting the Yuma area to spend the day at this park. And for those of you who are Geocachers, we found several and one of the best I have seen is in the hummingbird garden!!
