Watch Hill Lighthouse

We love visiting lighthouses. We were in Rhode Island in September 2018 and while staying at Whispering Pines Campground we decided to check out several lighthouses in RI and this was one of them.

Before heading out on our day trip adventures we will google where we are visiting to get information about the attraction, as well as directions and parking. We knew before arriving that the lighthouse can be accessed by foot via a private road from the village of Watch Hill. Vehicles are permitted but only for the handicapped and senior citizens. Parking is available in the village of Watch Hill, which is where we parked.

Restricted To The Public

The Lighthouse itself and its adjacent structures are restricted to the public. There is a museum and it is open during the summer season Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday afternoons and through the week after Labor Day.

The Watch Hill Lighthouse, located on a peninsula in southeastern Rhode Island, is managed by the Watch Hill Lighthouse Keepers Association. The Lighthouse has been operating since 1745. The watchtower and beacon were destroyed in a 1781 storm and construction of a new lighthouse and beacon were completed in 1807. The next lighthouse opened in 1856. Over the years there have been several accidents involving steamers and schooners and 330 people were killed in the accidents. Captain Jared Starr Crandall was the keeper of the lighthouse and in 1879 his widow, Sally Ann (Gavitt) Crandall, became the first woman lighthouse keeper there.

Final Thoughts

From the grounds, there are awesome views of the Atlantic Ocean, Block Island, and Fisher’s Island. There are some beautiful homes in the area, as well as beaches. We highly recommend checking out this lighthouse if you are in the Watch Hill, RI area. After visiting the lighthouse you can take a walk around the town and stop down to the docks to grab a bench and relax.
