Why Do You Need An External Battery Charger?
In today’s day and age, everyone is using electronics. Cell phones, iPads, Kindles, and notebooks are more popular than ever. Some people use them moderately and some never put them down!!! Any Candy Crush or Angry Birds users around?…lol.
Being on the road full time introduces a new set of uses and challenges for electronic devices. We are constantly moving around and parking in different locations and therefore we need to constantly monitor the weather. It’s very important especially during a storm to keep informed of what’s coming our way on the radar and any warnings that are put out by local government or the national weather service.
Besides monitoring the weather we love to do day hikes and Geocache. While we are in the trails we run the Geocaching app, weather apps, the camera, the compass, and the Map My Walk app. There have been a few times when we were in the trails that we got so into Geocaching that when we took a minute to stop and take a look around us we had no idea where we were. That’s where the compass and map my walk come into play.
It’s great to have all these tools at our fingertips but the downside to them is battery life on the phones. When we are running all these apps, the battery life of the phone is greatly reduced.
Who Turned Out The Lights?
What about during power failures? We have been through some storms that took out the electric in the campground we were at. Sometimes the campground itself just has a problem with electric and loses power for a while.
We do not have a generator so if the electric goes out we need a way to charge the phones. We could always sit in the truck and wait for it to charge but if it’s pouring rain out who wants to get soaked running to the truck?
So How Do We Keep Our Phone Charged?
This is where the SOONHUA External Battery Charger comes in. I was actually introduced to this charger when I was working at the KOA in Mystic CT. I met a guy who was tent camping and we got to talking.
He was a much more serious trail hiker than I will ever be. As he showed me all these apps on his phone I asked him how he kept his phone charged while he was out on the trails. He then showed me this charger. He had nothing but good things to say about it so I figured I would give it a try.
I ordered it on Amazon (of course…lol) and had it in a few days. I also ordered a second set of batteries.
The SOONHUA External Battery Charger comes with the charger and a micro USB charge cable. The batteries need to be bought separately. They are 18650 rechargeable batteries. The charger itself holds 4 batteries. We decided to buy a 10 pack of batteries so we always have extra.
The front of the charger shows the charging state of the 4 batteries. There will also be a “1” and a “2” on the right side of the screen. When you plug something in
The SOONHUA charger provides protection from overcharging, overheating, over current, over voltage, and short-circuiting. It also has reverse polarity and rest protection.
On the back of it, you will find the on/off switch, the 2 USB ports and the wall charging plug port. The two USB ports on the back charge at different rates, 1A & 2A. Both can be used at the same time.
While using this in the trails we get multiple full charges of our iPhones on one group of 4 batteries. Being so lightweight makes it easy to carry. If we are in the RV, we just hook up the phones and relax while it charges. Depending on the state of charge of your phone or the batteries in this charger, it usually takes under an hour to fully charge our iPhone 8’s.
The only negative that we have to say about this charger is that sometimes it turns on by itself causing it to drain when not in use. We are not really sure why but for us the benefits far outweigh this one negative. What we do is keep the batteries out until we are ready to use it.
Other than the random turning on, this charger has worked extremely well for us. Whether we have a power outage, we’re in the trails or sitting at a campfire away from any outlets, we know we can count on this device to keep our phones (and iPad) charged and running.
We would definitely recommend this item.
