Old Field Lighthouse

Old Field Lighthouse

Old Field Point Lighthouse is located in the village of Old Field at the end of Old Field Road. It sits between the entrances of Port Jeff Harbor and Stonybrook Harbor on the North Shore of Long Island.

As the maritime traffic started to increase on Long Island’s north shore it became necessary to find a way to warn boaters of the locations of the rocky shorelines. The original lighthouse was first built in 1823 and stood at 30 feet tall. Along with the lighthouse, a keeper’s quarters were also built. The original keepers’ quarters are still there today.

The current tower was built in 1869 and stands 34 feet tall. In 1933 the lighthouse was deactivated. In 1991 a modern beacon was installed and maintained by the coast guard.

Government Controlled

The government seized this lighthouse along with the Horton Point Lighthouse after the bombing of Pearl Harbor for the purposes of national defense. After the war, this lighthouse and Horton Point Lighthouse were vacated by the government and returned to their respective communities.

No Facilities

We have been to this lighthouse multiple times. I have led motorcycle groups here and I have also come by myself to just sit back and enjoy the peace and quiet. There are no facilities at this lighthouse. A few things you should know is there is a small parking lot that you can park in. Do not park on the road outside the lighthouse as you will be ticketed. The lighthouse is currently being used by the village police and also serves as the village hall.

Overlooking The Long Island Sound

You can’t go inside the lighthouse but you can walk around it. If you go up to the fence and look outward, you will be looking out over the Long Island Sound. You may even see the Port Jeff-Bridgeport ferry heading across.

If you like lighthouses you should make this quick stop. Although there are no tours or facilities it is still worth a quick look.

We have put together this short video of the Old Field Point Lighthouse. It shows the views of the property as we walked around the lighthouse. The water you are overlooking is the Long Island Sound. We were lucky enough to be there when one of the ferries was crossing. I tried to zoom in on it. Since I am walking around the property, the camera shakes in some spots.
