Florida Geocaches

Geocaching has become a really fun way for us to add to our adventures. Whenever we go somewhere, we find ourselves popping open the app to see what’s nearby. We don’t have a hand-held GPS so we use the phone app. If you would like to learn more about Geocaching in general, please read my blog post about Geocaching. I explain all the basic terms and what exactly Geocaching is. I also show and list what some of the containers look like that people use.

Type of Cache: Magnetic Key Box
Location: RT 90, Just Past The Entrance To Suwannee River State Park
City: Live Oak

Description: Originally we thought this one was located in Suwannee River State Park but after some more investigation, we found it is actually located on a closed down bridge off a dead-end street. Walking across this bridge to get the cache will bring you some great views of the Suwannee River. The street is located just past an Agricultural Check Station.

Twister’s Cache

Twisters Cache

Date of Find: 3/9/18
Type of Cache: Small Plastic Cylinder
LocationSuwannee River State Park
City: Live Oak

Description: This find was on the first trail we decided to hike at Suwannee River State Park. The funniest thing about this was we were taking pictures of the area this was located in before we realized there was a cache here. We kind of cheated on this one. After we got done taking pictures, we decided to check the geocaching app. It was a surprise to find out it was right near where we were!!! When we checked the clue on the app we looked down and there it was.

Battlefield Micro

Battlefield Mini Cache

Date: 2/28/18
Type of Cache: Small Magnetic Key Box
LocationOlustee Battlefield Historic State Park
City: Olustee

Description: Before leaving the park we decided to check to see if there were any more caches in this park. We had already found one earlier in the day so we were feeling confident. After a quick check, we noticed we were really close to another one. Off we go. This one didn’t take long. In the description, it said it was in a magnetic box and there was not much metal in this area. Chris nailed this one right away.

ORGT: Olustee Battlefield Historic State Park

ORGT Dade Battlefield

Date: 2/28/18
Type of Cache: Medium-Sized Plastic Tub
LocationOlustee Battlefield Historic State Park
City: Olustee

Description: This one is placed by the Florida State Parks Dept. I must say, this one gave us some trouble. We were walking around in circles for a while. The app kept changing locations. I was in the general area when a parks employee came over to us and asked us if we were searching for the Geo thing…lol.

When we said we were he pointed to some brush and lifted it with his gardening tool. It was in an area you wouldn’t expect but I was definitely zeroing in. I believe a few more minutes and my walking stick, that I was using for a poker, would have uncovered it.

Station PnG

PnG Cache

Date: 2/23/18
Type of Cache
: Small Magnetic Key Box
Location: Gas Station
City: Lake City

Description: This one had us so annoyed. We are staying at the RV park near this gas station so we have walked down here at least 2 or 3 times previously with no luck in finding it. We just figured it was gone. Then I get a notification that 2 other cachers found it after we looked. Grrrrrr. Now we were on a mission. Once we found it we could not believe how easy it was.

South- The Snake Wall

Queen Snake Cache

Date: 2/6/18
Type of Cache: Small Cylinder
Location: Alachua Rest Area
City: Gainsville

Description: When we stopped at the rest area to check out the Queen Snake Lookout, we decided to see if there were any caches. As is most of the time, there was a cache. We walked around in circles for a while and almost gave up. Then I found it!!! It was a cool spot. Chris has found the last few caches so I am glad I found this one…lol. You will be looking for a small cylinder.

Tubing Paradise

Tubing Paradise

Date: 2/5/18
Type Of Cache: Medium Plastic Box
LocationIchetucknee State Park
City: Fort White

Description: Our last visit to Ichetucknee state park was to hike the one trail we didn’t get to the last time. As we hiked the Trestle Point trail we just had to break out the Geocache app just to check. Hey, what do you know? There a cache nearby. Just a little hint on this one. There is a sign that says something like staff only. It’s a maintenance access road. You will need to walk on that road. No worries. You will not be on it long.

WC’s St James Place

WCs St James Cache Contents

Date: 1/19/18
Type Of Cache: Small Camo Pill Bottle
Location: Across From St James Episcopal Church
City: Lake City

Description: Ok, so after coming out of the previous church, we decided to do one more. We could have walked to this one as it was around the corner but we decided to drive. Once again we had to go up the road a bit and do a u-turn. We then made a left onto Bascom Norris Dr. The St James Episcopal Church is on your right-hand side and that is where we parked. This is a busy road so be careful. You will need to cross the street to find this cache. We had looked at a picture for a hint but were still having trouble finding it. We were getting ready to leave when I saw another tree with the same types of ivy growing as in the picture. This is where Chris found her 3rd cache for the day. The biggest hint I can give you on this one is not to go into the woods at all.

WC’s RT 47

Church Of Christ Cache

Date: 1/19/18
Type Of Cache: Small Cylinder
Location: Church Of Christ Parking Lot
City: Rt 47 Lake City

Description: We made a right out of Little Caesars and just under the overpass for I-75 on the left side was a Park-N-Ride. We had to go up a little and make a u-turn to get to it. There was supposed to be a cache in there but after about 45 minutes of searching, we gave up. The name of that one was Cannon Sink. We came out of the park and ride and made a right (the only way you can go) and went up a bit and made a u-turn. A few miles down the road was a church called “The Church of Christ”. Once again we had to pass it and make a u-turn back to get to the parking lot. We found this one relatively easy. Since this is a church you might not want to do this one on Sundays.

Not A Hike

Not A Hike Cache With Chris

Date: 1/19/18
Type Of Cache: Small Cylinder
Location: Behind Little Ceasers Pizza on Rt 47 near I-75
City: Lake City

Description: The weather has been so cold lately here in northern Florida. Well, cold for us anyway…lol. When we finally got a warm day we just had to get out. With me suffering from a cold and Chris with a pulled muscle in her arm, we decided to look for easy roadside caches near our campground. Although this one was just a little way behind the Little Ceasars Pizza place it was still a relatively short walk. You can park at little Ceasars for this one.

You will have to step down a little to get this so be careful or you will wind up in the swamp…lol. It was barely covered when we found it. Sorry guys, after we signed in and took pictures, we put it back and covered it with a little brush…lol.

Finally, Chris yelled, Rat!!!…lol. It is so obvious and you can see it from the trail. We had been down this trail on an earlier visit to this park and walked by it several times.  Now that we know where it is, we see it every time we go back to walk the trails and it always makes us chuckle.

As we head for the trail, a cache popped into the app. Off we went. This was a pretty easy find but there were a ton of muggles so we had to be discreet. Another one logged

ORGT Took State Park Cache

Type of Cache: Small Plastic Tub
Location: Tomoka State Park
City: Ormond Beach

Description: Once our family members arrived, we started walking around the park. I had shown them how Geocaching works with the Free Range Chicken find and now they wanted to try it. Description: We were meeting some family members at Tomoka State Park and wound up getting there a little early. So while we checked the place out, we decided to search the Geocache app and see what was nearby. What do you know? There was one pretty close to where we parked. I guess there is no harm in a little Geocaching while we wait for our family, right? I will give you a hint on this one. Not all caches are on the ground. Happy hunting!!

JJ’s Big Tree

Geocache Near Tree

Date: 12/13/17
Type of Cache: Medium Plastic Cylinder
LocationAlligator Lake Recreation Center
City: Lake City

Description: As we strolled along The Deer Trail, we came to a little fork. To the left was the continuation of the Deer Trail, the app was telling us to go right. We went right…lol. We figured we could always double back to get back on the hiking trail. This cache was on the opposite side of the trail the app was telling us to go. The app had us searching all around the trees on one side of the trail and we found nothing. At this point, we were ready to give up but decided to try one more thing. We looked on the other side of the trail and bingo!!! Another cache for the books!!!

Big Tree

The Big Tree

Date: 10/25/17
Type of Cache: Medium Plastic Box
LocationAlligator Lake Recreation Center
City: Lake City

Description: Lake City has a lot of parks nearby. One of the first ones we found was Alligator Lake Park. There are multiple trails there and we have been back there multiple times. Each time we hike there, we found a cache. We found this one the very first time we went to this park. We walked through the picnic area and found it under a nice big tree. Be careful as some of this trail might be a little swampy.

Who Told You?

Who Told You?

Date: 3/29/17
Type of Cache: Tiny Cylinder
LocationBourlay Nature Park
City: Leesburg

Description: We were getting ready to head to Texas for our workamping assignment. We dropped the truck off at Ford to get it serviced and head off on the motorcycle. After finding a shabby park at first, we drove around some more and found Bourlay. What a beautiful park. Of course, since there were trails, there had to be some caches, right? Well, there were. 2 of them as a matter of fact. The first one we attempted was a bust. We searched all over but found nothing. Down the trail a bit further, the app went off again. That famous little ding when you are getting close. This was also almost a no find. Actually, this cache was in a very clever spot and we almost missed it. It was for the birds…lol

The Ole Fishing Hole

The Ole Fishing Hole

Date: 3/25/17
Type of Cache: Coin on a String
LocationCooter Pond Park
City: Inverness

Description: Cooter Pond Park turned out to be a great little go-to park for us while we were staying at the KOA in Lake Panasoffkee. There was a beautiful pond and a nice boardwalk with picnic tables and benches to relax at. Since we were there multiple times, you know we had to check for caches. The app showed 2. Although we visited this park multiple times we were there, we could only find this one. It was a tricky one too.

Rock- A- Bye

Rock A Bye Geocache

Date: 2/11/17
Type of Cache: Medium Plastic Box
Location: Crystal River State Park
City: Crystal River

Description: Again we find ourselves out for a ride. This time to Crystal River Preserve. We found a place to sit by the water. There were a couple of picnic benches near a Kayak launch. We took out our lunch and ate while enjoying the absolutely beautiful day. Once we were done eating, we decide to take a hike on some of the trails. Time to open the app. About 45 minutes later we were logging into another cache.

Cooper’s Lakeview Cache 4

Cooper Lakeside Cache

Date: 2/4/17
Type Of Cache: Medium  Metal Box
LocationFort Cooper State Park
City: Inverness

Description: This one was a little tough to find. As a matter of fact, we almost gave up on this one. We searched high and low, near the trail and far away. It was the far-away part that finally worked. This one was further off the trail than most of the other ones we have found in the past. I had to go into Bloodhound mode to find this but it was worth it.

Coopers Cache

Chris Geocachingg

Swamp Cache

Swamp Cache

Type Of Cache: Medium Plastic Box
Location: Green Swamp Preserve West
City: Dade City

Description: As we stood there and laughed about the find, we realized there was another cache in this park!!! It was hunting season so we did not want to go in too far. A little while down a trail that was supposed to go to a campsite, the alert was going off. Chris did not want me to find another one as I am starting to get a lot more finds than her. Yes, we are a little competitive…lol. She immediately went into super tracker mode and within minutes, this one was found!!!

Tiny Tim Signs In

Tiny Tims Sign In

Date: 1/28/17
Type Of Cache: Small Magnetic Box
Location: Green Swamp Preserve, River Road Entrance
City: Dade City

Description: Here comes another motorcycle story. My friend from New York was visiting Florida so we decide to meet up and go for a ride. We came upon the Green Swamp Preserve as we were looking for some water that was supposed to be nearby. We followed the road and wound up at the entrance to the preserve which was also the end of the road so we decided to get off the bikes and stretch. There was a trailhead there that we were hanging around reading and talking when I decided to open the app. Holy cow!!! It was saying there was a cache nearby!!! Sweet. We all were scrambling around like a bunch of kids when I decided to look up. At first, I thought It was a bees nest. Nope, it’s a cache!!!

Two Bushes Geocache

Date: 12/16/16
Type Of Cache: Medium Size Plastic Tub
Location: Venetian Garden Park
City: Leesburg

Description: We found out about this park from a guy at a boat ramp. It turns out, this park was awesome. Over the course of our time in the area that winter this park treated us to a lighted Christmas display, a manatee, and of course a Geocache. This Geocache was found pretty easily. The park is loaded with Muggles (see my blog post on Geocaching if you don’t know what a Muggle is) which is why the cache has been archived.NoteThis cache has been archived meaning it is no longer there. Glad we found it before the thieven Muggles!!!…lol

ORGT Dade Battlefield Historic State Park

ORGT Dade Battlefield

Date: 12/2/2016
Type Of Cache: Medium Plastic Box
LocationDade Battlefield Historic State Park
City: Bushnell

Description: A nice motorcycle ride to Dade Battlefield Historic Park turned into another Geocache. This one I kind of cheated on. It had been a while since we last cached and were having trouble finding this one. We were heading back to the motorcycle with a “no find” and ran into a Park Ranger. I jokingly asked her if she heard of Geocaching. To my surprise, she said she did. She then laughingly asked me if I was having trouble finding it. When I told her I was, she said to wait where I was while she checked. That’s where the cheating part comes in. I watched where she went and when she came back and told me it was there, I waited for her to walk away and head right over to where she was. Another find!!! Cheesy but a find none the less…lol.
